Lucid Thoughts: Shutdown Imminent

Here we are, it is now day 203,934,978,983 of this global pandemic. As a country we were given $1200 to last us 6 months and counting. For most of us in NYC, that doesn’t even cover one months worth of rent. Yet and still this was the “solution” to make ends meet. To hush the people up. To make us feel like hope was on the horizon.

Yet month after month, doom and gloom just hovered above our heads. The only thing that was consistent and clear to all was fear. We all had sense of dread for just about everything. The potential of a second wave was known to be possible. Precautionary measures were taken by everyone. Employers began adding new “safety protocols” to basically give a reason for people to return back to work. But was it enough? Was it worth it?

Close to 1 million jobs were lost in NYC alone within a months time. Unemployment funds have dwindled. Felt like we are entering an even darker time. So much so, that even sun even has decided to leave even sooner than usual. Right after November 1st, its like the Sun decided to cut back on its shifts due to low funding. The time of day will have you looking crazy. Is it midnight, did I miss out on that premiere of a new season of my favorite show?!?! NAH, its just 4:30pm on Monday no less.

We have come back full circle to March of 2020, all over again. Should we or should we not close down? Honestly IMO, we should, but of course with a plan this time. Is waiting until after Thanksgiving the right thing to do? Personally no, it isn’t. We should’ve started way back on November 1st if we want to be real about it. Halloween weekend is what brought the numbers up for November. so keeping open through Thanksgiving, will give us huge spike right before Christmas, December 10th-ish. So what do we do, we allow capitalism to be the reason why we don’t close sooner. Let’s bank what we can off of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This was made clear when it was announced that December 1st would be when the “shutdown” for NYC would begin. The convenient day of..Tuesday..?! Whelp, apparently so, now lets see how the rest of this week rolls out.

So many holidays incoming that are about gathering with your loved ones and friends. The season that most look forward to or don’t. This time we have something to keep us from being around one another during a time that some need it most. So yes it’s difficult to say you shouldn’t be around anyone. Human interaction and touch is a necessity. The lack of it has serious effects on a persons mental health. But think to yourself, will it be better to not see this person or family members this one holiday? Or risk not having any future holidays with them next year and beyond?

However you choose to celebrate your upcoming holidays, please just be safe. Be kind, be understanding. Mask Up everyone.
