Lucid Thoughts: LOVECRAFT COUNTRY

Alright so I have received a ton of messages about everyone being upset/sad towards not having a season 2 of Lovecraft Country.

I AM WITH YOU ON IT, BUT ALSO NOT, HEAR ME OUT.

Lovecraft Country by far is one THE best pieces of acting, writing, directing, and producing to hit TV in a very long time. I was literally left breathless, speechless, simply blown away by the end of the season. So for this and this alone is why do not want a second season. Its something so beautifully crafted, that utilized all of the source material to bring this world to life. I don’t want a second season for sake of having one. Many shows have suffered from this and it ends up tarnishing the breakthrough moments, casting a shadow onto the brilliance of what was. This show was WAY TOO SPECIAL, to end up going that route.

Lately HBOMAX titled certain shows as “limited run series” aka it will only be one season. Honestly I am ok with this as we know first hand that this is it. We get something masterful crafted versus milked out for unnecessary amounts of seasons. MAYBE this show should’ve been in that realm of works like Watchmen, Mare of Easttown, The Undoing, and the oh so recent The White Lotus, a dark comedy for those wondering.

So hearing there isn’t going to be a second season I was relieved as I didn’t want LOVECRAFT COUNTRY to suffer like Big Little Lies and others have. Big Little Lies was fantastic, but a second season was created, with no no source material left to pull from. Leaving very minimal impact after its first season, despite great casting and directing.

On the flip side, the creator/producer of LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, Misha Green, had planned for a season 2. Talks, scripts, ideas were in motion. But on July 2nd, 2021, it was announced we would not get a season 2. She herself later tweeted what season 2 was going to look like, aptly titled: “LOVECRAFT COUNTRY: SUPREMACY” followed by the hashtag #noconfederate with a map of The Sovereign States of America.

Last night, July 13th, 2021 hours after the 18 nominations for LOVECRAFT COUNTRY were announced, she posted up a photo of the outline for the would be season 2 script with also a "season 3 and beyond” at the end. Time will tell if we get more of this wonderfully crafted world by Misha Green, perhaps on another platform, AppleTV+, would be ideal IMO. But regardless of what the future holds for this series, it doesn’t take away the power and impact it has made. The emotions everyone is feeling now about this makes me happy. As someone who was beyond excited to see the Lovecraftian genre brought to life, with people of color.

We exist, we believe, we are here. Keep supporting the works, for anything is possible.
